History Major.
History is one of the
most important sciences, without it people would do the same mistakes again and
again.History shows to humans where the problems were and how to change it.
In this paper one will find information
about salaries, requirements to become college history professor.
American college professor's public role
is not constrained by the physical boundaries of a campus, it extends to
community in which the college is located. The professors are expected to be
pillars of local literary societies, reading clubs and museums.in social and
cultural milieu college teaching is very respected but it isn't a place for a
people who want to gain wealth, it is something more like a way of life.
Colleges were placed in small towns or even
villages, because this kind of situation sheltered students from the
temptations of Bohema and professors from the temptations of wealth and power.
Starting from 17th and 18th century,
American professors has a larger public role than their Europena counterparts.
Special "American College System"
dates back to post - revolutionary
generation, who reinvented the English and Scottish college experience to fit
the needs of a secular and republican society, it meant not changing of
curriculum, who was still largely focused on western classics, but the
redefinition of faculty roles and responssibilities.
To post-revolutionary time dates back to new
"research model", which produced the first generation of American
Phds, who in time succeeded their mentors, and finnaly diminished America's
dependence on Europe.
From post-revolutionary times to nowdays
the numbers of college faculty has grown about hundred times(Lovett, Clara
"American professors an society".).
The biggest history major employer is
federal government, just sometimes government renames historians as archivists
, interpreters, resource managers or libarians.College and universities employ
a big portion of historians.Historians mostly in colleges teach, write and do
research.
State department hires many historians every
year, specially those with Phd degree. Many government agencies seeks the best
historical talent available for work in managment field.
Big agencies with
strong historical programs such as National Park Service, Libary of Congress
and National Archives nowdays rename positions held by historians and call them
libarians instead, but still thes positions are for people with history
major. There will be plenty of jobs for historians in archives, to put them in
electronic data format, which is easy accesiable by internet.
Most of the openings for historians are
listed in professional journals and most of the college history professors can
give information about getting job in the field of history(Smock, Raymond
"Where have all the historians gone".).
Historians are very versatile, they can work
a variety of professional jobs. Many history channels, when making new history
shows asks opinions from many historians, because there can be a big difference
in historians even from the same college, even people from the same faculty can
have compeltelly different opinions(Grele, Ronald "Interview with Charles
Maday Jr. of the History Channel".).
In future the job market for history majors
will expand, because of many retiring professors or teacher's who quit for
better paying jobs.Phd degree is needed if historina wants an college teacher
career, in High School level it has little importance(Miller, Jerry Personal
interview.).
To be a real historian you need to have a
natural curiosity, and of course you need a good historical knowledge
background.Today's historian, can't be
only one sided, he has to think outside of traditionalism, people in these days
are not interested in ortodox history any more.Historians can research
something so "trendy" as the private life of the Founding Fathers.
Every day historian has to feel like this:he
can watch Civil War Journal on History Channel fifty times in a row and still
be able to see in it something new(Grele, Ronald "Interview with Charles
Maday Jr. of the History Channel".).
To become a historian you have to get an
advanced degree in history, with bachelor's degree, you may find a job in
historical research, but advancement opportunities will be limited(Winner,
Frances, project director "Engineering, Science and Technology".).
Being a college history professor, you get
respect from others, especially from students, because those students want to
be there, not like High School students who usually don't have big respect to
the teacher(Miller, Jerry Personal interview.).
Earnings of historians depend on their
education and experience.Usually with bachelors degree salary is starting at
20000$ a year, if you have a master's degree salary start's at 30000$ a
year.Senior college professors earn as high as 60000$ a year, but in private
educational systems professors can earn as much as 100000$ a year(Winner,
Frances, project director "Engineering, Science and Technology".).
History is a very broad science, most of
historians specialize in special time period.Historians analyze information to
understand happenings in history.they get respect from others, from society,
historians actively participate in social life.Future job market is growing,
big government agencies are or will start hireing historians for archive
putting in electronic databases. The most important requirement is history
loving and curiosity.Senior historians can earn very good salaries. The main
thing for good historian is the passion to history, if you have that you are
already a historian.
