GETTING THE JOB IS NOT AN EASY TASK (2000)

Some of us can find a job easily, but some meets a lot of difficulties on the way to find a job. I’ll try to explain why it’s so.

There are a lot of requirements you must respond to be the best for an employer. Here are some of them:
-          the experience of the concrete job and the experience in the whole working life;
-          the quality of the doing job;
-          age;
-          sex;
-          education;
-          health;
-          amount of money you want to earn;
-          it’s may be a little bit strange, but even nationality.
All these things are the whole and its completeness in ideal for the different kinds of job, mostly – employers, is the best for every potential employee.
Let’s start discuss the ageism problem. For example you can become a ship captain not earlier you are forty or you probably won’t find a secretary place if you are older than forty. These two examples are clear because for becoming a captain you must go through the real course of the life in the see and that takes a lot of years. Concerning a secretary – there are two qualifications of secretary, I mean ether employer wants a secretary-waitress or real office lady. If employer wants a secretary-waitress she may be only pretty and young. But if employer needs an real office lady for keeping in order an control whole his business it doesn’t matter how old or how young secretary is, the most important – the concrete job experience and quality.
But if we are talking about ageism problem in generous than it’s very difficult to find almost any kind of job if you are very young or very old. The golden middle for becoming an employee is approximately from twenty till forty. If you’re in this golden middle it’s ok but not enough.
This isn’t a problem for older people to work in civil countries – most of them doesn’t have to work at all because government and society pays them enough for having a rest after their labour life, but Latvian pensioners cannot allow such kind of pastime.
Than there is problem to find a leading job for a young people. Of course it’s understandable – young person don’t have enough experience, only potential.
Than there is a sexism problem. It does no matter we are a living in the century of emancipation all the same there still exists a women discrimination problem for the leading job. It’s because of business world stereotype that the woman’s place is in the hose to keep it and to nurse children, also because there was a patriarchy through the thousand of years. I don’t mention the first kind of government was a matrerchy. It’s still a little bit strangely to see a woman as a director or as a president not only of company.
Except career all of us has the personal life. If the male can combine them more easily, than for the female it’s more difficult. Not all of the employers will keep a vacancy for a woman during and after decree. So, if an employer didn’t keep a vacancy or the contract wasn’t signed, the woman has to find another job, and it’s always more difficult to find a new job than to keep the present one.
Without that there is a stereotype of what sex – male or female – is suitable for one or another kind of profession. For example the most common stereotypes are the secretary and the sales manager. It’s very seldom when a male is a secretary and a female – a sales manager. But we can avoid this problem very easily during the study. I mean we know what kind of the stereotype is current, so everybody is able to decide who he or she wants to become.
There is two major nationalities in Latvia – Russians and Latvians. Despite people of these nationalities has one colour of skin and through the centuries were neighbours they all the time trying to compete each other, besides as possible harder and dirty. That’s way Russian employer wants Russian employee to make his nationality environment and vice versa. Such problem exists not only in Latvia where it has a politically historical basis. It is over the word where it may have religious, political, historical, ethnical bases. The biggest such kind of discrimination is racism. May be it’s not very actual in Latvia nowadays, but it will when Latvia becomes European Union member. Of course is the person is a cosmopolite there is for one such kind of problem less.
The most of employers requires the presence of education from a potential employee. The point is the employer wants you to know exactly what you are going to do. Of course a diploma doesn’t show haw a potential employee will work, but it’s showing how he or she might work. That is way very important get A’s while you’re studding. This is very important especially when you don’t have an experience.
The real problem for Latvian students to find a qualified job abroad ( in the USA and Europe). Unfortunately almost all of Latvian  diplomas are ineffective there. But this is more government problem than our student’s. However it might serve as a stimulus to improve not only other’s countries opinion, but an education system in whole in Fatherland.
An experience is the most important for employer. It’s the experienced knowledge of doing work. It means less had aches  for an employer, I mean an employer can be safer about the quality of doing job. But be ready – an employer will ask for a work-record book and if you were changing work places to often you most probably won’t get it. Employers are looking for the permanent  employees. It’s understandable – the human nature doesn’t like to change habits, except when it’s necessary.
Concerning experience – here is the problem finding a job for younger people just after graduation. Nobody wants to waste time for employee’s studding everybody want to have an experienced one. But in every minus is a plus, I mean in every negative thing always is a positive one. Inexperienced employee always is less paid. There always exist circumstances beyond our control. So it’s depends what kind of employee needs an employer either he wants a qualified employee or a less paid one. Each young person after graduation for getting such an important thing as an experience has to understand that for the first time won’t earn a huge amount of money – experience getting is some kind of education or the life course for witch you must pay too.
But there sill exist and always will professions which don’t need any experience, education, doesn’t matter either you’re male or female. Such professions are very low paid. But all of the employers needs the healthy employees. So handicaps or people with some kind of more complained chronicle diseases but with ability to work and clearly think are one of them who mostly cannot find a job. That is the whale society problem and society must be responsible and helpful for these people, the society must care about them. However in the civil countries these people don’t feel forgotten Latvian handicaps unfortunately will wait this careens till the rest of their life.
Than there still exist the problem of the narrow specialisation. As an example I’d like to mention a post USSR problem in finding a job. As you know the post USSR government politic was to develop and make strong its military. So there was a huge number of institutes where were prepared engineers, constructors, servicemen for working in military and for its developing and improvement. When in 1990 the USSR disintegrate and Latvia became an independent Republic, a lot of people who worked in this field lost their jobs, because Latvia doesn’t have a developed military field and won’t have for a long time. These great engineers and constructors have to work on less prestige places, some of them doesn’t work at all.
Without above-mentioned problem there were a lot of specific plants in post USSR on Latvia territory where worked a lot of people. The most of them got closed, because government  wasn’t able to finance them, so these people with specific professions lost their jobs. Again the same problem – for the most part of these people it’s to late to restudy.
Everybody knows current problems in finding a suitable job, so young people must think about who they want to be while studying in school and if the profession they chose will be demanded.
