JURMALA

The famous health resort is located on the coast of the Baltic sea 20 km from Riga.  Jurmala, a resort town possessing 150-year-old resort traditions, occupies approximately one-tenth part of the coastal line. Jurmala is the longest town in Latvia - 30 km stretching along the sea coast. The permanent population of the town is about 60 000. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are coming for their summer holidays there.

Jurmala has a fantastic relief - dunes, adorned with stately pine trees and unique fine-sand beach where the sea waves wash ashore the "tears of the pine trees" - the amber. The town is famous for its natural spa factors - the salubrious air and the sea, the high value of medical mud and mineral waters. Thanks to the temperate climate the rest is recommended to those who cannot endure the hot Southern climate, for cardio-vascular, lung and CNS diseases.

           The architecture of Jurmala is combined of historical wooden summer cottages, richly decorated with woodcarvings and modern buildings of spa institutions. Business and conferences can be combined with recreation and rest there. In summer Dzintari concert hall provides concerts of famous singers and performers.

Jurmala is the place for a city dweller tired of life to reacquire the feeling of being the Nature's child. If it’s a rainy day znd you don’t want to go to sea joy can enjoy yourself by going to some enterprises, museums, concerts etc.

One can visit The Kemeri National Park which was founded in 1997. It is the second national park in Latvia after the Gauja National Park. Its aim is to foster nature by conducting a non-destructive manner of management and to secure the conservation of the natural environment with the precincts of the Reservation and within the reservation areas, with the aim of preserving the unique natural resources. The territory of the KNP covers 43 ha. It includes part of the township of Jurmala west of Kauguri and Sloka, including the Great Kemeri Swamp, as well as the village of Kemeri and its health resort.

            Very interesting enterprises are at the “Dzintari” concert hall, Jurmala Theatre and Studio, House of Culture (in Majori and Kauguri), Club - UNDINE, Exhibition hall of Jurmala Culture House.

The museum, founded in 1962, shows how Jurmala has developed into the place one can see today. The art collection contains many paintings by outstanding Latvian artists of the past and present, works by German artists of Baltic extraction and Russian artists. Various thematic exhibitions can also be viewed. Repositories contain about 35 000 items.

Museum offers experts' consultations, sightseeng in the city, different lectures, series of lectures, stars or world cinema, interesting meetings, introduction to funds of museum, exebitions.

The poets Rainis (1865-1929) and Aspazija (1865-1943) lived in the Majori summer cottage from 1927 until Rainis´ death on September 12, 1929. The rooms on view give the visitor an insight into their lives and literary activities. The poets´ library can also be explored.
